Cougars end the Bolts basketball season

Liberty girls fall, 47-37, to Cedar Rapids Kennedy in 5A regional quarterfinal
A kiss for luck? Ava Meyer appears to give the ball a masked kiss just before the opening tip off of a Class 5A regional quarterfinal against Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Kennedy High School. Meyer had an eight-point night for the Bolts in a season-ending 47-37 loss.

CEDAR RAPIDS The 2020-2021 varsity girls basketball season ended for Liberty High Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Cedar Rapids Kennedy as the Cougars won a Class 5A regional quarterfinal, 47-37.
Kennedy entered the contest No. 15 in the final weekly rankings of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) while the Lightning were unranked all season.
Haley Napoli gave Liberty its only lead of the game with a three-point basket in the first period, putting the Lightning up briefly, 3-2. It would be the Bolts only basket of the quarter as the Cougars won the period, 11-3. Libertys second-period points all came from beyond the arc as Kinsley Robertson, Bella Tafolla, Ava Meyer and Keiko Ono-Fullard each scored with a three-point basket. The Lightning trailed, 24-15, at halftime.
Ono-Fullard had a seven-point run in the third period bringing Liberty within five points, 27-22, of Kennedy and triggering a Cougar time-out. A Napoli free throw made it 27-23 while a pair of charity shots from Haley Schroeder cut the gap to 28-25. Meyer drained a three-pointer to tie just before the buzzer making it 28-28 going into the final eight minutes.
Kennedy rebuilt the lead and went up, 35-28, when Gaudet sank a three-pointer. With 2:30 remaining, Kennedy was ahead, 40-32, and increased the advantage to 42-32. A Meyer two-point basket made it 42-34 while Gaudets second three-point basket made it 43-37. Late fouls accounted for Kennedys final four points for the 47-37 win.
Ono-Fullard, a sophomore, led Liberty with 10 points, while fellow sophomores Ava Meyer and Avery Gaudet produced eight and seven points apiece.
Liberty finished the season at 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Mississippi Division. Kennedy (14-8) advanced to the semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 20, where they faced the Tigers of West Des Moines Valley High School.
