CEDAR RAPIDS– The Iowa City West High Trojans suffered their sixth loss of the season Tuesday, May 16, as the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors pulled off a 1-0 upset at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
The Trojans had a stiff breeze to their backs in the first half, but the Warriors’ keeper managed to pick off several West High attacks. Washington scored with a shot into the wind that found its way past West keeper Zach Frisbie halfway through the first period.
West’s last best chance came with about five minutes remaining in the second half as the ball bounced around in the box but ultimately was knocked away to preserve the Warriors’ shutout.
The loss ended a two-game win streak for the Trojans and dropped them to 11-6 overall while the Warriors won their fourth in a row for a 10-6 record.
The substate battles for a trip to the 2017 state tournament began on Monday, May 22, with the Trojans in action on Wednesday, May 24. The substate final is set for Saturday, May 27, at West High starting at noon.
