Creek Boys are top of the WaMaC West again

Withrow’s 25 points leads CCA in 76-74 win over Benton Community Clippers claim second West Division championship

VAN HORNE– They are the champions again.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ basketball team pulled off a nail-biting 76-74 win over Benton Community on Tuesday, Feb. 16, and claimed the WaMaC West Division championship in the process. The Clippers, defending their title from last season, went 12-0 in the division and 16-2 in the WaMaC as a whole, finishing the regular season at 17-5 overall for their first back-to-back conference championship.
The Creek Boys found themselves in an 18-13 hole at the end of the first period and were down, 37-35, at the halftime break. By the end of the third period, the Clippers regrouped and counterattacked to lead, 62-54.
The game was tied 74-all late in the fourth when senior Mike Potter sank the go-ahead bucket with 27 seconds remaining. Clipper defense swarmed the Bobcats in the closing seconds forcing a three-point attempt at the buzzer, missing its mark and sealing CCA’s win.
Christian Withrow led all with 25 points. Ryan Navara had 21 and 11 came from Ben Swails. Potter, the hero of the game, had a five-point night and led on the boards with seven rebounds.
Postseason play began on Monday, Feb. 22, as the 8-13 Grinnell Tigers visited Tiffin in a Class 3A Substate 6 quarterfinal. The winner plays either Washington or Oskaloosa at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, in Washington. The substate final is scheduled for Monday, March 1, with the 2021 Boys State Basketball Tournament held Monday, March 8, through Friday, March 12, at the Wells Fargo Arena, in Des Moines.
