Creek Boys fall in rainy slog against the Saints

CR Xavier Catholic tops Clear Creek Amana, 30-7
In honor and recognition of Patriots Day (remembering those lost on Sept. 11, 2001), the Clear Creek Amana varsity football team carried Old Glory with them as they took the field at Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic High School Friday, Sept. 11. In addition, the CCA students were decked out in red, white and blue.

CEDAR RAPIDS– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity football team dipped to 1-2 on the season as they fell 30-7 to undefeated (3-0) Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic Friday, Sept. 11, at Saints Field.
The Creek Boys caught a lucky break halfway through the first quarter when the Saints fumbled the ball on a third-and-goal, and Mark Gorbatenko recovered for the Clippers. Unfortunately, the ensuing Clipper drive failed, and the period ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
Xavier scored on a touchdown pass with 4:47 remaining in the second quarter to go up 7-0, and scored again on a 50-yard run with 1:06 left in the half, putting the Clippers into a 14-0 halftime deficit. The Saints wasted no time adding to their lead early in the third quarter with another touchdown for a 21-0 advantage.
The Clippers picked up another lucky break as Ben Swails picked off a Xavier pass heading for the Creek Boys’ end zone. The foiled Saints touchdown drive started a campaign by the Clippers from their own 10-yard line.
Unfortunately for CCA, their good fortune did not hold out, and in the fourth quarter, a bad snap on a punt attempt lead to a two-point safety for Xavier, and a 23-0 advantage. Xavier’s final touchdown and extra point made it 30-0 before the Clippers forced a turnover late in the period, which set the table for Swails (taking over at quarterback for an injured Ryan Navara) to connect with Harrison Rosenberg on a 32-yard pass for CCA’s only score of the night. Anthony Hennes nailed the extra-point kick and CCA avoided the shutout.
Alex Figueroa led the Clippers’ ground attack with 24 carries, but strong Saints defense held him to only 70 yards, and kept him out of the end zone. Navara completed three of 13 passes for 27 yards and was intercepted once while Swails completed six of 10 for 87 with the touchdown pass to Rosenberg. Defensively, Gage Freeman had six solo tackles with four apiece from Riley Wolfe, Hennes, and T.J. Bollers.
The Clippers return home to Tiffin on Friday, Sept. 18, to take on Benton Community. The Bobcats improved to 2-1 with a 14-13 win in overtime over Oskaloosa at Williamsburg (due to derecho damage at Benton Community).
