Creek Boys sail past the Muskies in Week Two

CCA defeats Muscatine, 41-21
Tom Johnson, a senior, sallies forth despite the “anchor” of Muscatine’s Prince Wei Friday, Sept. 4, at home. Johnson returned two kicks for 15 yards and caught three passes for another 21 as part of a 41-21 win for CCA.

TIFFIN– Week Two of the 2020 prep football season found the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers at home in a non-district contest against the Class 4A Muskies of Muscatine with a greatly reduced crowd in the bleachers, including a smaller but no less vocal student section. After a Week One loss on the road to Mount Pleasant, the home field advantage may have factored in as CCA dominated the Muskies, 41-21.
The Creek Boys got on the scoreboard roughly halfway through the first quarter as Ryan Navara connected with fellow senior T.J. Bollers for a seven-yard touchdown. Anthony Hennes, also a senior, booted the extra-point kick through the uprights to make it 7-0. The Clippers found good fortunes as Mason Stanfield, a senior, intercepted a Muskie pass, setting up a short drive, which culminated in Navara throwing a lateral to Bollers, who then fired off a pass to Harrison Rosenberg, a junior, for a 49-yard touchdown. Hennes came through again, and the Creek Boys were up 14-0 with 6:35 left in the period.
The Muskies came charging down the field in retaliation, and scored on a short run with 2:54 left in the quarter to make it 14-7. Muscatine tied the game 14-14 early in the second quarter on a quarterback keeper. Stanfield picked off a second Muskie pass with 5:41 left in the half. Unfortunately, the ensuing drive died and the game was knotted at halftime.
In the third quarter, Nate Beckman, a senior, scooped up a loose ball for the Clippers, putting the boys in blue on the Muskies’ 21-yard line. Alex “Fig” Figueroa, a senior, scampered up the Muskie’s sideline to score with 5:09 left in the period. Hennes’ fine kick made it 21-14, a score that held through the remainder of the quarter as the Clippers made a drive late in the period, and scored mere seconds into the fourth as Gage Freeman, a junior, ran the ball into the house for a 27-14 advantage. The Muskie’s messed up Hennes’ perfect record for the evening as they blocked his point-after attempt.
Ben Swails, a junior, picked off a Muscatine pass with 11:09 left in the contest, and with 8:50 to go, Fig scored again to make it 33-14. Hennes’ kick was unmolested, and CCA went up 34-14. Navara connected with Bryce Mougin, a junior, for a touchdown with 3:06 left in the ballgame to make it 40-14. Hennes’ kick was good, and the Creek Boys went up 41-14. The Muskies refused to go quietly into the night however as they mounted a final drive ending in a touchdown with 1:03 left to go.
Figueroa led the Clipper offense with 112 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns while Navara made eight carries for 26. Rosenberg was the leading receiver with 104 yards on four passes (and one touchdown), Tom Johnson, a senior, had three catches for 21 yards while Bollers took four passes 19 yards (with one touchdown). Hennes, Freeman and Nate Beckman, a senior, made six tackles apiece.
The win improved CCA’s record to 1-1 and dropped the Muskies to 0-2.
CCA begins Class 3A District 6 play on Friday, Sept. 11, as it travels to Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic High School. The Saints moved to 2-0 after defeating Western Dubuque in Week One, and Linn-Mar in Week Two.
Xavier is requiring all spectators to wear a protective face covering for admission and throughout the duration of the contest, and Saints Field will operate at 50 percent capacity. Xavier is distributing three wristbands per player, coach/manager, cheerleader, dance team member and band member. In addition, 100 general admission tickets will be available, first come-first serve, at the gate. Xavier will live-stream the game through the NFHS Network.
