Creek Girls break losing streak

CCA wins, 9-5 and 9-3, at home

OXFORD– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity softball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a pair of wins Monday, June 12, at home against the Vikettes of Vinton-Shellsburg.
The Clippers took game one, 9-5, and took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single from Abbi Kinnaird, a two-RBI double from Claire Navara and a sacrifice fly by Lydia Banwart. Three more runs in the third gave the Creek Girls a 7-1 lead. The Vikettes rallied in the top of the fourth with three runs, but a timely run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth preserved the Clippers’ lead.
The Vikettes threatened in the seventh with one run.
Anna Fox had three hits for the Clippers with two from Katie Pitlick (three RBI) and two from Ainsley Schrock (one RBI). Riley Hennes, Kinnaird, Navara and Banwart had one hit each with two RBI for Navara and one apiece for Kinnaird, Schrock and Banwart. Raina Henze went the distance in the circle, giving up seven hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out six and walking two.
The Creek Girls took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two with an RBI single from Schrock and an RBI single from Pitlick. One run scored on a Vikette error as well. The Clippers put one runner across in the third and three more in the fourth before Vinton-Shellsburg scored a run in the top of the sixth. The Clippers added two runs in the bottom of the sixth and survived a one-run threat from the Vikettes in the top of the seventh. Schrock led at the plate with three hits (two RBI), Pitlick, Kinnaird and Navara had two hits each with three RBI for Pitlick and one each for Kinnaird and Navara. Fox, Hennes, Banwart and Abby Crow had one hit each with an RBI for Fox. Peyton Grafft worked all seven innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs, striking out one and walking one.
The wins improved CCA’s record to 7-13 ahead of a home doubleheader against Solon.
The Clippers host their own tournament Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, at the University of Iowa’s Softball Complex, 2820 Prairie Meadow Dr. in Iowa City. Games start at 10 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. Center Point-Urbana visits Oxford on Monday, June 26, for a 6 p.m. doubleheader. The Clippers stay at home on Wednesday, June 28, as Benton Community visits for a 6 p.m. doubleheader.
