Cross Country girls take title at Williamsburg invitational
WILLIAMSBURG– The scoring was as easy as one-two-three at the Sept. 25 Williamsburg cross country invitational. Spartan black came across first, second and third in the girls’ 4-kilometer race. With the rest of the varsity crowded into the top 12, Solon ran away with the team title.
Lauren Benzing was first across (15:22) the finish line. Alex Smith, who has pushed into the top three or four in most meets this season, took it up a notch, grabbing meet runner-up honors (15:59) with Mallory Carr (16:10) a few strides behind in third.
With Bailey Kelsay finishing seventh (17:00) and Molly Walkner ninth (17:17) in her first varsity start, the Lady Spartans– ranked fifth this week in Class 3A– outpaced host Williamsburg– ranked seventh– 22 points to 49. Mount Pleasant (66) was third followed by Belle Plaine and English Valleys. Three schools, Tipton, Tri-County and Scattergood, fielded incomplete (less than five scoring runners) teams.
Solon’s team depth showed through, with sixth and seventh varsity runners Katie Folkerts (17:21) and Carlyn Haas (17:34) finishing 10th and 12th. Junior varsity runners Emily Capper (17:51) and Corri Goldsmith (18:26) were 16th and 22nd among the 82 girls who ran, with eight more teammates in the top half of the field.
