District almost done with OEC fundraising
SOLON– As the seconds tick by, with no timeouts remaining, the Solon Outdoor Events Center (OEC) has entered the final moments of a four-year fundraising campaign for a new 3A-ready stadium.
A springtime groundbreaking on the project will commence after bids for the latest phase are collected by the school board in early March.
Community cash donations for the project are still being sought through the Solon Education Fund until Wednesday, Feb. 29, when the school will formally end all fundraising efforts. The current total fundraising figure is close to a half-million dollars, roughly a fifth of the projected cost to the schools.
In December, the North Liberty-based Gerdin Family Foundation gave $400,000 to the project.
Superintendent Sam Miller said the Feb. 29 donation deadline was for only cash gifts; in-kind agreements could come later. In-kind donations for labor, construction or material costs may still be worked out after the Leap Day close of fundraising.
The school and OEC fundraising team are seeking additional donors inside and out of the school district. Checks can be sent to Solon Education Foundation, OEC, P.O. Box 275, Solon, IA 52333 or contact Steve Duncan at 515-360-3728.
The stadium is intended to be used for school events, soccer, track, band, and football activities.
