The family of Edward Vorel welcomed friends to a time of remembrance and celebration on Nov. 16 at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona, where a brief memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Private graveside services will be at a later date. Ed died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, following a short illness, at the Iowa City Veteran’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Edward Elmer Vorel was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Ely, the son of Louis and Agnes (Marash) Vorel. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in Central Europe, Normandy, France and Germany. He was discharged in 1945. In 1962 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Schillig. She died in 1982. Throughout his life, he lived in Hills. They had one daughter, Arlene. Ed worked at many jobs including U-Smash Um I Fix Um and retired from the City of Iowa City.
Survivors include his daughter; Arlene (Scott) Johnston and his two grandsons; Ethan and Taylor Johnston, all of Iowa City; one brother; Leonard (Delores) Vorel of Tiffin.
The family of Ed Vorel would like to thank the staff at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty and the Veteran’s Hospital staff for all their kindness and loving care of Ed.
