Elaine Delores Aamodt Malott

Elaine Delores Aamodt Malott, 79, of North Liberty, died May 21, 2009, in the Mercy Hospital Hospice Unit, Iowa City, from complications due to Parkinson’s disease. Per Elaine’s wishes, her body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Old Brick in Iowa City.
Survivors include her children Greg (Monica) Malott of New London, Marci Malott (Terri Bellville) of Des Moines, and Julie (Dan) Knight of North Liberty; grandchildren Joshua (Amanda) Malott of Salem, Joseph (Lisa) Malott and Elizabeth (Aaron) Curry of New London, and Kate Malott of Newton; plus eleven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Virgil Lee Malott, Jr. of Iowa City; her mother, Thea Oline Aamodt Hall of Longview, Wash.; and here husband, Virgil Lee Malott, Sr., of Bella Vista, Ark.
Elaine Delores Aamodt was born March 24, 1930 in Rugby, ND, the only child and beloved daughter of Thea Oline Aamodt Hall, of Barton, ND. Her family moved from Barton, ND to Longview, Wash., in 1944. She attended Robert A. Long High School, Longview, Wash., where she graduated with distinction in 1948.
She was a 1951 graduate of Emanuel Hospital School of Nursing, Portland, OR.
She married Virgil Malott of Independence, Mo., on April 7, 1951 at Emmanuel Luther Church, Longview, Wash. Together they celebrated over forty-eight years of marriage. Virgil preceded her in death on October 17, 1999.
Her nursing career spanned over 50 years, in specialty areas ranging from neonatal intensive care to trauma, intensive care, post-surgery and general medicine. She served at hospitals in Oregon, Washington, California, Minnesota, Iowa, Texas, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.
She was an active member of Bella Vista Community Church, Bella Vista, AR. After retirement from nursing she volunteered at Vista House, an adult daycare center in Bella Vista, and was a Hospice volunteer in Northwest Arkansas.
She was an active, caring, compassionate person whose entire life was given in service to others. She was beautiful without being aware of her beauty. Her innate grace put everyone who met her at ease. She loved food, especially chocolate. She delighted in great conversation, great music, and was particularly proud of her Norwegian heritage.
She was a devoted daughter, wife and mother, and placed her family above all else in her life. Her devotion to her husband led her to follow him in his career across the United States. She made friends wherever she lived and worked, and her friendships lasted a lifetime.
Her life exemplified her love of God, her dedication to family, her love of hard work and striving for excellence, and her desire to place the needs of others above her own.
Her legacy lives on in the lives of those who were touched by her presence.
