Elaine K. (Tomash) Summer
Elaine K. (Tomash) Summer, 60, Dubuque, passed away Friday, April 17, 2009. Services were Wednesday, April 22, in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque. Visitation was held Tuesday at Behr’s Funeral Home.
Elaine was born on Oct. 12, 1948, in Cedar Rapids, daughter of Elmer and Elsie (Swenka) Tomash. Elaine attended school in Lisbon, and graduated from Clear Creek High School in Oxford. She then received a degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Elaine was head resident in Currier Hall at the university. She also was active in Upward Bound while at UI. Elaine taught math and coached in McGregor. She then moved to Dubuque, and worked as head resident at the University of Dubuque. She worked at A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. for the last 26 years. Elaine married Kenneth L. Summer on Jan. 7, 1984, at North Bend Church of God, North Liberty. He preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 2005. Elaine was very active in Junior Achievement and the Boy Scouts, serving as den leader when her boys were involved in scouting. She was a talker, and liked visiting with her sisters, brother and in-laws. Elaine was a fantastic mother who was very proud of her boys. She enjoyed dancing, going out with friends on Thursday nights and cooking, especially her potato soup and veggie pizza.
Survivors: two sons, Larry J. Summer and Tony J. Summer, both of Dubuque; five sisters, Marvel Jean (Richard) Janko of Cedar Rapids, Karen (Joe) Steffens of Swisher, Jerillyn (Michael) Dougherty of Oxford, Kathy (Steve) Crow of North Liberty, Denise (special friend, Dean Cruise) Pearson of North Liberty; a brother, Eugene (Leann) Tomash of Solon; four sisters-in-law, Magdalen (Gilbert) Lopata of Cedar Rapids, Norma (Jim) Perry of Dubuque, Janet (special friend, Bob Witzig) Gieseman of Peosta, Carol (Allen) Errthum of Dubuque; numerous nieces and nephews.
