Emil J. Koval, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Oct. 1, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids from sudden cardiac arrest. Funeral service was held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Oct. 8, with the Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer officiating. Entombment with military rites was held at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife Jeanette (Jan); sons John Frederick Koval, and Rob Frederick (Susan) Kishiue-Koval and their son Kazuma (Kaz) Kishiue-Koval of North Liberty. Emil was preceded in death by his wife Alice Frederick Koval, his mother Monika (Sumik) Koval and his father John Koval.
Emil was born in Hastings, Pennsylvania, on April 13, 1927. He attended Lynch Nebraska High School and held multiple post-secondary degrees, including an MBA. He worked at Collins Radio for 29 years as a mechanical engineer manager.
Emil’s first love was farming, and he loved the land. He particularly loved living in Lynch, Nebraska. Emil was fluent in Czech, Slovak and Russian languages.
Emil was drafted in 1945, and released from military service at the end of World War II. He was recalled to service from 1951 to 1952.
He was a member of the Kum Disciples Class at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, the American Legion at Lynch, Nebraska, Czech and Slovak Museum, and an active member in many retiree engineering groups.
