Fairfield wins 27-14 to finish CCA’s regular season

A setback for the Clippers

North Liberty Leader
FAIRFIELD– The Trojans of Fairfield pulled off a 27-14 upset win over the district champion Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Friday, Oct. 24, to end the regular season. The win improved the Trojans to 4-2 in Class 3A District 5 (5-4 overall) while the Clippers dropped to 5-1 and 7-2.
The Trojans found the end zone first, scoring with three seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 29-yard pass and a successful extra point. They extended their 7-0 lead late in the second quarter with a 2-yard run and successful kick with 1:32 left in the half.
A 42-yard pass from Clipper quarterback Nile Rourke to Cordarro Pearson gave CCA a touchdown with 55 seconds left in the half. Jon Jacobson booted the extra point for a 14-7 ballgame. But, the Trojans scored again just past three minutes into the second half on a 54-yard reception and took the 21-7 lead with the extra point.
The Clippers answered with 3:59 left in the quarter as Rourke connected with Aaron Akers on a 20-yard touchdown reception. Again Jacobson got it done and the gap was narrowed to 21-14. A 3-yard run for a Trojan touchdown with 3:23 put the game out of reach for CCA.
The Clippers retained the top spot in the district and faced District No. 6 fourth-seed Newton in the first round of Class 3A playoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 29, in Tiffin.
