Five seniors to lead CCA in 2015 volleyball

Clippers hope to return to state

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– History was made last year by the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team as they appeared in the state tournament for the first time since 1999 and only the third time in school history. The Clippers, under first-year head coach Jackie Clubb, knocked off Cedar Rapids Xavier, 3-0, in a Class 4A Regional Final to earn their state tourney berth. CCA went on to take down Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 3-2, in the state 4A quarterfinals before falling, 3-0, to Harlan in the semifinal round.
The Clippers (4-3, 26-9) finished in a three-way tie with Center Point-Urbana and Williamsburg for third place in the WaMaC West behind conference champion Marion (7-0, 32-7) and Independence (5-2, 34-8). CCA finished the season at 27-10 overall.
Now in her second year at the helm, Clubb returns five seniors and three juniors to the lineup. Seniors Alyssa Weldon, Ashley Prusha and Corrine Schwarting are returning starters for the Clippers.
Weldon, a four-year starter and outside hitter, earned First Team All-Conference honors last year with 198 kills, 464 assists, 40 blocks and 30 ace serves, as well as 275 digs.
Prusha, a middle, picked up Second Team All-Conference honors with 186 kills, 26 ace serves and 90 blocks.
Schwarting is a right-side hitter for the Clippers.
Juniors Sheyanne Koethe (defensive specialist), McKenna McCreedy (defensive specialist) and Lauren Helle (middle) round out the returning starters.
Returning letter winners are Mallory Allen (senior, outside hitter), Megan Beckler (senior, setter with 60 assists last season) and Riley Hennes (sophomore, setter).
Sophomore Zoey Boehme joins the squad as a defensive specialist while freshman Shauntina Williams is an outside hitter.
“The 2015 senior class brings positive leadership and experience to the varsity team,” Clubb said.
Natalie Fry, Meredith Whitmer, Jen Schlieman, Michelle Lutz and Don Jackson will assist Clubb this season.
The season opens on Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Grinnell Tournament with a 9 a.m. start, before the Clippers take on WaMaC rivals Solon and Mount Vernon on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Solon with a 5 p.m. start.
