Five state champions lead West High swimmers

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Five state champions are back in the lineup for the West High men’s swim team this season. Last year, the team went 10-0, placed second in regionals and won the state meet. With a large returning state meet contingency and added depth, the Trojans look to make a big splash.
Matt Anderson, a senior, was on the champion 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay last season and qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM as well. Mark McGlaughlin, a junior, led-off the 200-yard medley and anchored the 400-yard freestyle. McGlaughlin also won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and earned Co-State Athlete of the Year honors.
Aidan Keen, also a junior, won the 200-yard freestyle event, anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay and led-off the 400-yard freestyle relay. In addition, Keen also earned Co-State Athlete of the Year honors. Oliver Martin, a sophomore, anchored the 200-meter medley relay and led-off the 200-yard freestyle relay. Martin also qualified for state in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events.
Rounding out the champions is Will Scott, a junior. Scott was in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and also qualified for the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events.
Coach Rob Miecznikowski, in his 13th season as head coach at West, also returns 29 other upperclassmen and an as-yet unknown number of newcomers.
“Competition in the state has improved over last season,” Miecznikowski said. “Eleven teams in the state had young squads last year and they are all back.” He sees his Trojans as favorites for the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) title, but added, a strong and young Linn-Mar is the conference team to be aware of. Looking farther out across Iowa, West Des Moines Valley and Dubuque Hempstead should provide stiff competition.
Jordan O’Donnell (in his eighth season with the program) and Byron Butler (second year at West) are assisting Miecznikowski this year.
