Girls battling elite teams
URBANDALE– The Solon Lady Spartans continued to challenge teams from bigger schools while dominating their conference last week.
Although the varsity softball squad picked up two more losses, they came against some of the best teams in Class 5A.
No. 5 West Des Moines Valley needed every one of its four runs against Solon at the Elite Eight Classic in Urbandale over the weekend. Valley handed the Lady Spartans their third loss of the year, 4-3, but Solon nearly stole the win with two runs in a seventh-inning rally.
The Lady Spartans defeated host Urbandale (9-1), and Linn-Mar (4-1) before falling to West in games held over the weekend.
Solon is currently 21-3 and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. The Lady Spartans are still undefeated in conference play.
The Solon varsity squad swept road doubleheaders from Maquoketa (5-1, 13-2) and Western Dubuque (13-0, 11-1) last week. Arran Weeces, Casey Musgrave and Emily Ira all picked up wins, with Weeces striking out 11 and allowing only three hits against Maquoketa. Mel Breza was 3-3 in that game with two RBI, while Kara Misel was 3-4 with a double. Misel launched a home run and a double in the second game and ended up with five RBI.
The Lady Spartans had six stolen bases against Western Dubuque in a game which featured another 11-strike out performance by Weeces. Solon scored 13 runs on 14 hits (out of 25 at-bats) and five doubles.
The Lady Spartans return to Solon for a home stand the week of June 25.
