Girls give Coach Tucker his 100th win

Solon defeats Marion in 2-1 overtime shoot-out Friday

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans celebrated their inaugural game at Spartan Field with a 2-1 overtime shoot-out against Marion Friday, giving coach John Tucker his 100th career victory.
Anna Seydel hit the winning goal to give Solon a winning start to the season.
Alison McKinnie had the team’s lone goal in regulation, tying the score at 7:45 in the second half on an assist from Abby Haas.
Marion’s goal came on a penalty kick at 17:07 in the first half after an inadvertent hand ball in the box.
Coach Tucker was happy with the results.
“Overall we played very well considering it was our first game of the season and also on the new field,” Tucker said. Because of poor weather, he added, the team hadn’t been able to practice many tactical strategies for the larger field.
“That said, we dominated the game and possessed the ball well,” Tucker continued. “I could see our confidence growing as the game went on, and we settled into our rhythm.”
He credited keeper Katie Silberstein with a great night in the goal, including a key save in the shoot-out to secure the victory.
“Our defense was solid, not allowing Marion to get shots on the goal,” he said. “It was a great night, and a great way to start the season.”
Solon’s girls start the 2013 year ranked No. 10 in Class 1A after a 14-4 record in 2012, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
“I am really looking forward to seeing what this team can accomplish by the time the dust settles at the end of the season,” Tucker said.
The win Friday earned Tucker his 100th career coaching win.
“It was a special night for me, but also for this program,” he said. “I want to take the opportunity thank all of the fans, as well as current and former players and parents who have supported me and this program over the years.
“Also, a special thanks to my family who doesn’t see me from March to June every year, and to the administration and the entire community at large for their tremendous support,” he said.
The Lady Spartans play three straight on the road before returning home Friday, April 19, top host Anamosa. Solon was scheduled to visit Waterloo Columbus April 9 (Tuesday), West Liberty Thursday, April 11, and West Delaware Monday, April 15.
