Girls lose in OT
SOLON– Kirsten Purdy’s three-pointer with less than a minute in regulation tied the game, but Solon’s Lady Spartans couldn’t pull it out in overtime.
Solon’s girls fell to the Golden Hawks of Mid-Prairie Thursday night, 31-29, as part of a home non-conference doubleheader before winter break.
Purdy’s three, her only basket of the game, came on a designed play after a timeout late in the game when the Lady Spartans had fallen behind on a night when both teams were struggling to score.
In the overtime, Solon knotted the game again at 29 and had the ball with less than 10 seconds remaining, but a turnover led to a transition bucket and a win for Mid-Prairie.
“There were a lot of plays to be made in that game,” Head Coach Mark Sovers said, noting the Lady Spartans had numerous opportunities to put the Golden Hawks away.
“I was proud of the fact they never gave up,” Sovers said of his team. “They were down and they fought back a couple of times.”
Solon led 13-10 at halftime and extended the lead to six points in the third quarter, but the Lady Spartans went ice cold from the field, allowing Mid-Prairie to erase the deficit and take the lead in the fourth.
The Lady Spartans went eight minutes without a basket in the third and fourth quarters, and finished the game connecting on only 11 of 45 shot attempts.
Mid-Prairie shot only marginally better, 13-46 from the field and 5-11 from the free throw line.
Rylee Smith led the Solon scoring with nine points. Karly Kramer and Alyssa Rickels each had four points.
“We had a hard time shooting the basketball,” Sovers admitted. “It’s just an area we need to improve on.”
The girls return to the court Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Dyersville against Beckman, then host Anamosa Friday, Jan. 6.
