Girls sweep Mustangs
SOLON- In the bottom of the fifth inning, Mel Breza cracked a three-run homer to bring an early finish to the first half of the Spartans’ softball doubleheader versus Mount Vernon on June 4.
Pink was the color of the night in an annual match to Strike-out Cancer. Lady Spartans paid tribute to classmate Brett Smith while many of the Mount Vernon team played in honor of long-time Mustang Coach Gary Stamp who died in November last year from lung cancer.
Pink chalk lines marked the field, players wore bright pink socks and uniforms, even the umpire carried pink ball pouches.
Proceeds from a silent auction and bake sale were donated to fight cancer.
The Spartans exploded in an eight-run second inning that sent 14 Lady Spartans to the plate. Breza started the early rally with a lead-off double, then scored on a Casey Musgrave single. Breza went 3-3 in the game.
Arran Weeces struck out the side in the second and third innings but gave up a homer in the fourth. A two-run shot by Mustang Hannah Whitley bounced off the top of the right-field fence and rattled the Solon right-handed starter. Weeces was relieved by Emily Ira who gave up a hit before a Rylee Smith-to-Breza-to-Musgrave double play ended the inning, 4-6-3 for those scoring at home.
Breza’s walk-off homer came after the Spartans were already up 11-2, and the 10-run rule ended the game early.
In the second game, Emily Ira pitched again, got the win, 10-6, on hitting by standouts Smith (3-3), Emily Bransky (3-4) and Taylor Nearad (2-3 with two runs).
The Spartans swept a June 2 round-robin versus Highland and Springville. Weeces had 12 strikeouts against Highland and Misel went 2-3 at the plate with a home run. Solon won 11-0 over Highland.
Misel hit another homer versus Springville. Emily Ira also hit a home run in the 10-2 Spartan win.
Solon won again at an away game in Marion, 10-1. Weeces had 15 strikeouts. Smith and Nearad each hit 2-3 with two runs. Smith had 3 RBIs.
The Lady Spartans are the top-ranked 3A team in the state.
