Hall mark

City officials and a few guests gathered at the site of Tiffin’s future city hall on Friday, Oct. 4

TIFFIN– On Sept. 25, the Tiffin City Council awarded a buidling contract to City Construction Group of Iowa City in the amount of $382,700. The 2,560 square foot building will house city administrative offices and city council chambers. Additionally, space will be available to rent to the public as a community room for personal events like baby showers, Scout events, graduations, and other occasions. The project is slated for a February completion, weather permitting.
Council member Jim Bartels, who picked up a shovel at last Friday’s event, said it will be a welcome change for the city. “It’s been the goal of the town to get a city hall that is representative of Tiffin, where people can actually meet or have a conference or event,” said Bartels. “Right now, we have no community meeting place; we use local churches, the library and the fire department’s spare room. This will be permanent space for the community and the council and those attending the meetings. We also have three people working in the current city hall, and we certainly have outgrown the space for their daily duties. There is no private space to meet, and right now, we have to close during the noon hour.”
Bartels said he is also pleased the new city hall will be located in the heart of Tiffin.
“I think it’s a good thing because that is where the core of the town started, and it stayed that way until the early ‘90s. Now the town itself has opened up in all four direction. I wanted it near the center of town, so people don’t have to drive too far to get there.”
