Hawkeye women win two

IOWA CITY– Sunday was a great day for the Hawkeyes to open up the offense, make a close game a blowout and win their 11th game of the season, third in a row, against Northwestern, 74-46.
You have to start with Kachine Alexander. If she doesn’t get some all-conference votes I want a recount.
The 5-9 junior had the first triple-double in eight years (all Big Ten Cara Consuegra was the last one in 2001) scoring 10 points, with 11 rebounds and 12 assists.
“Kash” plays with so much energy and is so much fun to watch crash the boards and come away with a rebound while she is surrounded by taller players.
I knew she could play defense and rebound but her passing is really coming on.
Hannah Draxten was on the other end of some of those passes as she had her best game so far with 13 points including three 3-pointers.
Hannah showed great range last summer in the Game Time League, but sometimes it takes a while for freshman to adjust to the speed and play of the Big Ten.
Then you have the three seniors contributing, with Kristi Smith scoring 11 to go with three assists and two steals; Megan Skouby scoring 10 points, with two steals and one assist; and Wendy Ausdemore, six points, four assists and one block.
Joann Hamlin came through with 16 points, six boards and two assists. She couldn’t be stopped down low, hitting 8-10 from the field.
The Hawkeye women won their second Big Ten road game of the season last Thursday taking care of Illinois, 72-62.
It’s a little surprising that the Hawks can win buy 10 despite being out-rebounded 46-29, plus The Fighting Illini’s all-world player Jenna Smith scores 18 and pulls down 18 rebounds.
How did Iowa do it?
It sure helps when you shoot 62.5% from the 3-point line. It’s also nice when starting point guard Kristi Smith not only goes 4-5 from behind the line and scores 15 points but has five assists and no turnovers.
“Right now I’m having a lot of fun out there,” said Kristi who has been on fire from the outside in the last three games.
Throw in Megan Skouby’s 21 points, seven rebounds and Kachine Alexander, with a career-high nine assists and 10 rebounds plus Kamille Wahlin coming off the bench with a career-high 12 points and you have Iowa’s 10th win of the season.
This is why Lisa Bluder’s system of having balanced scoring is so important.
Joann Hamlin had early foul trouble and had only four points in 20 minutes and Wendy Ausdemore only took five shots but made two 3-pointers.
If the Hawkeyes can keep that balance going, they will be tough to beat down the stretch.
