IC, CCA school board elections set
IOWA CITY– Eight candidates have filed to run for the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Education.
For the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, five candidates have declared their intent to run.
On the ICCSD ticket will be Phil Hemingway, Marla Swesey, Jeff McGinness, James Tate, Sally Hoelscher, Patti Fields, Karla Cook, Julie VanDyke and Robert Porter, all of Iowa City, and Jeff Alden of Coralville. Those candidates will be running to fill four at-large seats that carry a four-year term – the expiring terms of current board members Gayle Klouda, Patti Fields, Toni Cilek and Michael Shaw – and one at-large seat to fill a vacancy left by the early resignation of school board member Michael Cooper, a term that expires in 2013. The ICCSD has a seven-member board.
On the CCA ballot, candidates will include Rick Hergert, vying for one open seat in District 1 (currently held by Betsy Momany), Steve Swenka, running for one open position in District 3 (the expiring term of board member Tim Hennes) and Bob Broghammer, Lisa Jiras, and Terry Davis looking to fill two at-large seats currently filled by board members Kathi Huebner and Kevin Kinney. All new terms will be for four years. CCA’s board of directors is also a seven-member board.
The filing deadline for candidates to be on the ballot for the Sept. 13, 2011, school board elections was last Thursday, Aug. 4. In both the Iowa City and CCA districts, candidates were required to obtain a minimum of 50 signatures of eligible voters, or 1 percent of the registered voters within the district.
Pre-registration deadline for voters in the Sept. 13 election is Friday, Sept. 2. Voters can still register after the deadline using the election day registration process. Friday, Sept. 9, will be the last day to request absentee ballots by mail.
