IOWA CITY– West High’s fourth-ranked Women of Troy celebrated Senior Night Feb. 3 by running over the Rams of Dubuque Senior, 78-37. West entered the contest with a 15-3 record to Dubuque’s 1-15 showing.
A pair of 3-pointers by Rachel Saunders and Lauren Zacharias to open West High’s scoring barrage set the tone early as the Women of Troy put up 25 points in the first period. Seniors Katie McGrane and Ali Tauchen had four points each in the period, while senior Maddie Huinker sank a free throw.
By halftime, West was ahead 48-13. Wholesale substitutions up and down the West High bench gave valuable floor time to many with regional competition looming large on the horizon. Sydney Allen, Carrie Callahan and Cora Saunders contributed points with Saunders putting up a game ending 3-point shot to bookend Rachel’s game-opening three.
Lauren Zacharias led West High with 14 points including a pair of 3-pointers while Emma Koch contributed 10 points. McGrane (eight points), Tauchen (eight points), Huinker (three points) and manager Shea Lewis were honored just before the start of the varsity game along with several senior Rams.
The regular season ends on the road in Waterloo at Waterloo West High School on Friday, Feb. 10. The Women of Troy earned a first round bye in regional play so will start the road to Des Moines and the 2017 Girls Class 5A State Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 18, at home in a regional semifinal game against the winner of a Wednesday, Feb. 15, contest between Ottumwa and Marshalltown. The regional final is set for Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the site of the highest-seeded team that is still in contention.
