CEDAR RAPIDS– The Class 4A substate final game on Tuesday, Feb. 28, between the Iowa City West High Trojans and the Muskies of Muscatine was billed as a clash of the titans, but ended up as another routine outing for the Trojans as they put away the Muskies, 83-44, to return to the state tournament in Des Moines.
The Muskies drew first blood with a 3-point shot, but Izaya Ono-Fullard evened the score, and Connor McCaffery dropped in a 3-pointer of his own for a quick 6-3 lead. Fullard struck again from 3-point range, to make it a 9-5 lead, before Devontae Lane grabbed a Muskie pass and drove in for a layup. Unfortunately for Lane, Muscatine standout Joe Wieskamp smacked the ball away, denying the West High senior. Nate Disterhoft added a two-point shot, for an 11-5 lead, while a Lane 3-pointer, the first of four on the night, made it 14-9 as the period ended.
Seybian Sims opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws and Disterhoft and Patrick McCaffery sank 3-pointers to build West’s lead to 22-9. A Lane 3-pointer late in the period made it 30-13 and a Conner McCaffery three-bomb gave the Trojans a 36-17 advantage at halftime.
The West High School of Basketball continued to educate the Muskies in the third period as Patrick McCaffery opened the half with a slam dunk. Lane, Hakeem Odunsi, Ono-Fullard and Sims made it 50-25. The Trojans held the high ground, commanding with a 55-29 lead going into the final eight minutes. Lane sank a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth period with conventional buckets from Odunsi and Connor McCaffery. Sims chipped in a 3-pointer to make it 80-44 and Hirsche Henstrom sank a late 3-pointer to make it 83-44.
Lane led the Trojans with 21 points. Nineteen came from Connor McCaffery and 10 from Ono-Fullard. The win advanced West to the state basketball tournament and a Wednesday, March 8, battle with Newton.
The Trojans, making their seventh tournament appearance, take a 20-3 record into the contest and were deemed the No. 1 seed. Dubuque Hempstead (18-5), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (18-5) and Bettendorf (18-5) also represented the eastern side of Iowa. The Trojans were the Class 4A runner-up last year and took the championship in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
