Iowa City man drowns in Coralville Lake
NORTH LIBERTY– An Iowa City man drowned near Scales Point Campground on Coralville Lake Saturday.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, 36-year-old Somphaeng Syvixay of Iowa City was with a group of friends and family that had jumped from a pontoon and were swimming over to a diving rock on the shore when Syvixay and another swimmer began struggling in the water at approximately 4:54 p.m.
The other swimmer was pulled from the water by occupants on the pontoon, which was owned and operated by Melvin Shaw of Coralville. The individuals on the pontoon were unable to see or find Syvixay, according to a sheriff’s department news release.
At approximately 8:50 p.m., first responders recovered Syvixay’s body .
Responding agencies included the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, North Liberty Police Department, Johnson County Metro Dive Team, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Johnson County Emergency Management, Jefferson/Monroe (Swisher) Fire Department, Solon Fire Department, North Liberty Fire Department, area ambulance, Army Corps of Engineers, and the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The incident is under investigation. An autopsy was pending as of Monday, June 16.
