Iowa City West upsets Bettendorf

Trojans live to fight another day with 24-17 win in first round of 4A playoffs

BETTENDORF– They puzzled the pundits and baffled the Bulldogs as Iowa City West High’s 10th-ranked Trojans pulled off a 24-17 upset over No. 5 Bettendorf Friday, Oct. 28, in the Bulldogs’ kennel to survive the first round of the Class 4A football playoffs.
Bettendorf has often been a wrench in the gears of the Trojan football juggernaut, having knocked West out of championship contention in 2011 with a 45-13 pounding, and again in 2013 (27-24) as well as during the regular season in 2014 and 2015.
The Bulldogs seemed on their way to ending the Trojans’ season when they scored on the first possession of the game and took a 7-0 lead. West High quickly retaliated with a long bomb pass from Evan Flitz to Traevis Buchanan which put the Trojans in scoring position. Flitz then hit Oliver Martin in the end zone for a touchdown. Lucas Karwal’s extra point kick was good, and the game was tied.
The Bulldogs bit again early in the second quarter with a short run for their second touchdown and a 14-7 lead that stood at halftime.
Flitz scored in the third quarter with a quarterback keeper to tie the game with a perfect kick from Karwal. Karwal booted a 20-yard field goal with 1:27 left in the period to give West High a 17-14 lead after the Bulldogs halted a scoring drive. The Trojans turned the tables on the Bulldogs, bringing their next drive to the same halt as the period ended. Bettendorf tied with their own field goal four seconds into the final period.
The Trojans saved the best for last as they snagged the ball away from the Bulldogs. A pass to Martin put West High in scoring position again, and Flitz connected with Devontae Lane for the winning touchdown. The ball bounced West’s way again with 49 seconds remaining as the Trojans again knocked the ball away from Bettendorf and recovered it before running out the clock.
Lane was West High’s leading rusher with 14 carries for 47 yards while Buchanan was the top receiver with five receptions for 130 yards. Martin had six carries and a touchdown, but only had 65 yards while Austin West had one carry for 66. Cole Mabry led the defense with four solo tackles
The win sends West High to Cedar Rapids Prairie on Friday, Nov. 4, for a quarterfinal matchup with the 9-1 Prairie Hawks kicking off at 7 p.m., the same time City High kicks off with Cedar Rapids Washington at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids. The winners will meet in the semifinal round on Friday, Nov. 11, in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls at either 4:06 p.m. or 7:06 p.m.
West is in the playoffs for the 14th time and sixth consecutive year. However, the championship has eluded the Trojans since 1999.
