SOLON– Will the third time be the charm?
It would take a win against Benton Community Oct. 23 to extend the varsity volleyball season for the Lady Spartans.
Solon’s postseason was hanging in the balance heading into a Class 3A Region 6 quarterfinal at Benton Community. The winner advances to a semifinal at Davenport Assumption Tuesday, Oct. 29, with the regional final decided Monday, Nov. 4, at Iowa City West High.
The Bobcats have defeated the Lady Spartans twice before this season– once at a Center Point-Urbana tournament Oct. 12, and then again during WaMaC Conference pool play Oct. 14 in Solon– both by 2-0 scores.
“The girls are looking forward to playing Benton Wednesday for a third time,” Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin said.
In pool play at home, Solon kept it close against Benton Community (21-19, 23-21) after losing to No. 5 (Class 4A) West Delaware, 21-10, 21-12.
“Not a good game for us,” Ferin said of the loss to the Hawks.
The Lady Spartans only managed 13 kills against West Delaware and had no blocks.
Solon was more effective against Benton Community, with 22 kills from a balanced attack. Senior Emma Harris led offensively with six kills, while freshman Delaney Bombei added five, sophomore Maddie Manifold had four and senior Jane Willms recorded three. Freshman Kylee Flynn had 11 assists and senior Khaylor Fleck added 13 digs.
Junior Kennedy Bombei returned to the lineup briefly against the Bobcats.
“Kennedy did come back in against Benton but has not been back in since,” Ferin noted. “We were testing her hand strength and she still has some pain and we don’t want to make it worse so it doesn’t look good for her being back in this week.”
She connected on her lone kill attempt, had seven assists and eight digs.
The Lady Spartans went 1-3 over two days of WaMaC Tournament play, picking up a 2-1 win over Central DeWitt Oct. 17 at Marion.
Solon took the first game, 25-23, but the Sabers roared back 25-8 to take the second.
“We just go unfocused,” Ferin said. “Glad we got focused again before it was too late, but that’s exactly the sort of thing we are trying to stop.”
The Lady Spartans took the deciding third game, 15-10.
Senior Katie Yi led the offense with 10 kills, while junior Katlyn Jeter added six and Manifold five. Junior Peyton Moore had 12 assists, while Flynn was right behind with 11. Flynn and Fleck each had 15 digs.
The team put up eight blocks against Central DeWitt, with three for Yi and two for Willms.
Solon also sparkled at the service line, connecting on 61-63 serves with five aces. Sophomore Camryn Keith was 13-14 with two aces, while Fleck (11-11, Flynn (12-12) and Yi (17-17) each added an ace.
The team’s third loss came at the hands of Williamsburg in another close match. The Raiders prevailed 25-21 and 25-22.
Yi had 10 kills; Fleck had 15 digs and was 16-17 at the line with an ace; Keith (five) and Willms (four) accounted for nine of the team’s 11 blocks.
“Benton was much better as was Williamsburg,” assessed Ferin. “We are really trying to focus on consistency and trusting each other to do their jobs. We have a lot of fight left in us and these seniors aren’t ready to be done just yet.”
