SOLON– Depth paid off for the varsity Lady Spartan golfers during a triangular meet with Maquoketa and West Delaware at the Lake MacBride Golf Course April 13.
Solon’s top three golfers were within two strokes of each other’s scores.
Maquoketa’s Taylor Thede took medalist honors with a score of 44, and West Delaware’s Ashley Goebel was runner-up with a 46, but that wasn’t enough to top Solon.
The Lady Spartans carded a 217 team score, pulling away for the win led by a 51 from Dani Carter. Grace McCarty was right behind with a 52, while Reegan Helle was just another stroke off the pace with a 53. Leah Woessner’s 61 rounded out the varsity scoring. Heather Vance (63) and Julia DeValk (64) rounded out the Solon squad.
West Delaware was second with 245, and Maquoketa was a stroke off with a 246.
The Lady Spartans travel to Anamosa Friday, April 21, then return home Monday, April 24, to host Iowa City Regina. The girls travel to the Amana Colonies Golf Course Thursday, April 27, for a triangular meet with host Clear Creek Amana and South Tama.

Solon girls take second at West Delaware triangular
MANCHESTER– Solon’s Lady Spartans golfers opened the 2017 season with a second-place finish at a triangular meet with host West Delaware and Vinton-Shellsburg at the Pin Oak Pub & Links in Manchester April 6.
The varsity girls shot a 222, while Vinton’s Vikettes took first with a thrifty 206. West Delaware trailed with a team score of 255.
Vinton-Shellsburg’s Rachel Tandy carded a 48 for medalist honors.
Julia DeValk (51), Dani Carter (54), Heather Vance (56) and Reegan Helle and Katie Feldkamp (61 each) combined to lead the Lady Spartans. Leah Woessner scored a 62 but was out of the scoring for Solon.

Western Dubuque nips Lady Spartans at home
SOLON– The Solon Girls Golf Team hosted Western Dubuque April 10 at Lake MacBride Golf Course. On paper, the Lady Spartans would hold a distinct advantage due to playing on their home course and the fact that Western Dubuque lost its top two golfers from last year to graduation. Dani Carter paced the Lady Spartans with a 49, but the other three scores that came in for the Spartans were not enough to defeat the Bobcats, who edged out Solon 218-227.
Reegan Helle (55), Leah Woessner (59) and Julia DeValk (64) rounded out the Solon scores.
“We had a good outing from Dani tonight, but we need to find three other consistent scores to go along with it. We expected to play better on our home course, but the season is still very young and this just proves that there is still work to be done” said Solon head coach Curtis Hendrickson.
Solon’s junior varsity defeated Western Dubuque by a 255-283 score.

Lady Spartans take second at Williamsburg invitational
WILLIAMSBURG– The Solon High School Golf Team traveled to Stone Creek, in Williamsburg, for its first invitational of the year April 12. Four teams made up the girls division: host Williamsburg, Anamosa, Clear Creek Amana and the Lady Spartans. What started out as a beautiful day, quickly turned into a cloudy, cool, windy day. Leading the Lady Spartans was Reegan Helle, shooting a 97 (46-51) which was good enough for runner-up medalist at the meet. Dani Carter posted a 98 (50, 48), Grace McCarty a 104 (54, 50) and Leah Woessner a 107 (54, 53) for a total of 406. Katie Feldkamp 117 (58, 59) and Heather Vance 118 (63, 55) also shot quality rounds.
The 406 was good enough for second place at the invitational. Anamosa won the meet, with Williamsburg third and Clear Creek Amana fourth.
