Lady Spartans drop two

SOLON– Things aren’t going to get any easier for the Solon girls as they head out this week to play the conference’s two top teams.
The Lady Spartans dropped below .500 last week, losing at home against Central DeWitt and on the road against Iowa City Regina.
The Lady Spartans (6-8) will have three games on their plate this week, traveling to Mount Vernon Tuesday (Jan. 24), hosting a make-up game with Independence Thursday, and then heading back on the road to Western Dubuque Friday night. After a final home game with Dyersville Beckman Tuesday, Jan. 31, Solon’s last three games are all away.
Cold shooting continued to plague the Lady Spartans last week.
At home against Central DeWitt, Solon posted only 14 points in the first half and trailed by eight at the break.
“We were able to get it down to five (points), but didn’t make enough plays and gave them too many free throws,” Sovers said of the 54-42 loss.
The Lady Spartans out-rebounded DeWitt 39-23, but went 14-50 from the field and 12-20 at the free throw line. The Sabres were 21-35 from the field, with Meghan McClinton pouring in 23 points (8-13 FG, 7-12 FT).
“We just couldn’t consistently make good shots,” Sovers noted. “We did a good job of rebounding that game, and we have to have that mentality and play good defense to offset the struggles on offense from time to time.”
Solon was led in scoring by Karly Kramer and Rylee Smith, each with 12 points. Kramer also had nine rebounds to lead the team (five offensive). Smith had four steals.
The rim was even colder down in Iowa City Saturday as part of the girls/boys doubleheader with Regina.
The Lady Spartans trailed by six points at the half, but couldn’t gain any ground against the Regals in the third and fourth quarters and lost 61-46.
Solon was 21-57 from the field, including 2-17 from the three-point line. The Lady Spartans also had an off night at the charity stripe, making only two of 11 attempts.
Smith and Ashley Holubar each had 12 points to pace the team in scoring. Kramer had nine rebounds, while Holubar had seven. Solon had more offensive than defensive rebounds.
Regina connected on the same number of shots from the field (21), but went to the free throw line 24 times, connecting 16 times.
“They (Regina) had some nice length,” Sovers said, “but I thought we did a nice job of playing together as a team.”
