Lady Spartans move up to No. 4
SOLON– Solon’s varsity volleyball team escaped No. 12 Central DeWitt on the road and moved up another notch in the rankings last week.
“DeWitt did a good job of taking us out of our game, but the girls showed enough maturity to end up winning in four,” noted Head Coach Kurt Trout. “Our defense, led by Rylee Smith, did a great job picking up the offense on an off night.”
Solon captured the first two games narrowly, 26-24 and 25-23, but DeWitt took the third game by another narrow score, 23-25. The Lady Spartans rallied in the fourth game, by another close score, 25-20.
Smith had 16 digs to lead Solon defensively, and had one of the Lady Spartans’ three aces.
Kelsey Cave led the Solon attack with 15 kills, while Reagan Johnson had 11 and Kelsey Hinrichs 10. Maegan Bruene led the squad with seven total blocks.
The Lady Spartans followed up by honoring their lone senior, Reagan Johnson, Thursday night against Anamosa. Solon quickly dealt with Anamosa 25-8, 25-16, 25-7. Hinrichs led in kills with 18, followed by Cave with 12.
Over the weekend, Solon traveled to Anamosa for a four-team tournament, defeating Belle Plaine, North Linn and Anamosa to win the tournament for the fourth straight year.
“We had a chance to play a lot of younger girls,” Trout said of the tournament. “Allison Herdliska, Taylor Nearad, Katie Silberstein and Emily Ira all saw time. Taylor and Emily set well, while Allison did a good job anchoring the defense, and Katie swung well from the outside.”
The Lady Spartans moved to 21-1 with the wins. They travel to Mount Vernon Tuesday, Sept. 27, and then close the regular season at No. 6 West Delaware Tuesday, Oct. 4.
