Lady Spartans open season with win at Vinton
VINTON– Led by sophomore Rylee Smith’s 11 steals and 16 points, the Lady Spartans took to the basketball court for the first game of the season last week, a 53-26 win over Vinton-Shellsburg.
“I was very proud of the way we played defense,” said Solon Head Coach Mark Sovers. Solon collected 22 steals on the night and helped generate offense during the season opener.
The Lady Spartans lost a majority of last year’s scoring– Kelsey Dircks, Danielle Herdliska and Brie Winegar– to graduation. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this group will step into those roles,” Sovers said.
At Vinton, Smith, Emma Rickels, Ashley Holubar, Melanie Breza and Kelsey Cave started the game for Solon.
Rickels was the only other Lady Spartan in double-digits with 13. Karly Kramer added seven points.
Cave had eight rebounds to pace Solon on the glass. “She’s going to help control the boards,” Sovers noted. “She did a nice job of that Tuesday night.”
The Lady Spartans shot 3-11 from three-point land and 8-16 from the free throw line.
The first home game for the Lady Spartans was scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 29, against Marion, with another road game Friday, Dec. 2, at Center Point-Urbana.
Sovers said the WaMaC East will be up in the air this year, with Mount Vernon and Central DeWitt as possible contenders. “Hopefully by the end of the year, we’re in that conversation for a district title, too.”
