SOLON– The Lady Spartans turned up the pressure, and with it came the first win of the season.
Fueled by 28 total steals, half of them from senior Josie Durr, Solon routed Independence 59-24 during a home non-conference varsity basketball game Nov. 29.
Durr led all scorers with 25 points and added eight rebounds to pace the team. Junior Sam Miller added six points, as did junior Brianna Smith and sophomore Gabby Marty. Smith had six rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, while Marty pulled down five boards.
The Lady Spartans shot 32 percent from the field and 30 percent from the 3-point line.
Solon built a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, extending the margin to 33-15 at the half.
Almost everything went the Lady Spartans’ way, including an early third-quarter possession during which Durr stole the ball but missed the layup and the following offensive put-back. Independence rebounded the ball but an outlet pass was intercepted, leading to a layup by Smith to make the score 40-17.
Smith punctuated the performance at the end of the third quarter when she bulled her way through two Independence defenders in the paint and rolled in a layup as she hit the floor to provide Solon with a 48-22 margin.
The Lady Spartans limited the Mustangs to just two points in the fourth quarter.

The Solon girls found themselves on the wrong end of a blowout later in the week when the team traveled to Center Point to face the undefeated Stormin’ Pointers Dec. 2.
Center Point-Urbana handed the Lady Spartans their second loss of the season, 64-37.
The Stormin’ Pointers jumped out to a 16-9 first-quarter lead and continued to outscore the Lady Spartans through three quarters of play. By halftime, the deficit had grown to 15 points and by the start of the fourth, Solon trailed 56-29.
Durr again led the Lady Spartans with 16 points, while Smith added eight. Durr also led the team in rebounds (seven) and steals (six). Lexi Stebral added five rebounds off the bench.

Solon rebounded the next day with a 62-43 win at Washington.
The Lady Spartans were cold beyond the arc but shot 50 percent from 2-point land, led by Durr with 22 points and Bryn Hanrahan with 17.
Senior Bryce Hinkel came off the bench to lead the team in rebounds with nine. Durr added six rebounds and nine steals.
Solon pushed out to a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Demons cut the lead to five points at the half. The Lady Spartans outscored Washington 34-20 in the second half to secure the win.
After hosting Central DeWitt Dec. 6, Solon travels to Epworth to face Western Dubuque Friday, Dec. 9, and returns home to host Anamosa Tuesday, Dec. 13.
