Lady Spartans rack up three more wins
SOLON– Solon girls’ soccer keeps moving along!
With half of the season behind, this year is shaping up to be a good one for the Lady Spartans. Last week saw wins against Central DeWitt, Monticello and Dyersville Beckman.
“The team has had a very good stretch of games. We have been able to fine tune our formations and the girls are really starting to feel comfortable with the changes and are working very well together,” stated head coach John Tucker. “Injuries continue to be a concern for us, but we are lucky to have a lot of depth on this team. I’m very happy with where we are right now. We have a lot of games left to perfect our play and be ready for regionals.”
Last week opened with a home game against a tough Central DeWitt team. Alison McKinnie penetrated the Saber offense twice in the first 15 minutes to put the Spartans up 2-0. The rest of game was played mostly at midfield with very few shots on goal by either team. With three minutes to play in the game, Jackie Meyer lofted the ball just under the goal bar to make the final score 3-0.
Thursday’s game at Monticello was an opportunity for the all of the Spartans to get a good amount of playing time with a 6-0 win. Jackie Meyer led the team with two goals. Anna Seydel, Alison McKinnie, Brianna Pike and Ali Herdliska each added a goal. There were several great assists from Seydel, Abby Haas and Katie Silberstein.
The wind and cold returned for Friday’s home game against a very physical Dyersville Beckman squad. Solon took the lead early in the game with a goal by Alison McKinnie off a nice assist from Abby Haas. McKinnie added two more goals in the first half, but the Sabers came back just before half with a goal that sidelined Solon keeper Mikaela Lighty for the rest of the game. Early in the second half Dyersville Beckman scored on a penalty kick to make the score a little tight at 3-2. McKinnie found an opening in the defense to clinch the win at 4-2. Anna Seydel had two assists and Katherine Carr had a great assist all the way from the backfield.
You can see the Lady Spartans play at home this Saturday, May 5, at 9 a.m. against West Delaware.
