Lady Spartans split with Anamosa at Ft. Dodge tourney

ANAMOSA– Solon’s varsity softball team moved to 19-8 on the season June 19 with a doubleheader split at Anamosa.
The Lady Spartans lost 7-6 and won 11-4.
No statistics were available at press time.
Solon had picked up a pair of losses over the weekend while participating in a Fort Dodge tournament June 16-17, going 2-2 overall. The Lady Spartans downed Clear Creek Amana (CCA), 8-3, and shut out Harlan, 8-0. The losses came against No. 5 Class 4A Bishop Heelan, 5-3, and to Jesup, 8-7.
Solon picked up a 6-4 win at Story City against Roland Story June 15. In that game, senior Bryn Hanrahan was 2-4 at the plate with a double and three RBI, while senior Jess Heick was 4-4 with two runs scored.
Roland-Story jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead, but the Lady Spartans crossed the plate three times in the top of the second inning and never trailed again.
Freshman Kayla West earned the win on the mound with three strikeouts and one walk while allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits. Senior McKenna Miller pitched an inning-and-a-third of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.
At the Fort Dodge tournament, Solon overcame a 7-2 deficit to tie the game, only to fall, 8-7, to Jesup.
West gave up four earned runs on three hits in two-thirds of the first inning before Miller was called in to pitch the remainder of the game.
Solon scored five times in the top of the fourth inning to knot the game at 7-7, but Jesup brought home a run in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win.
Hanrahan, sophomore Taylor Ryan, Heick, Miller and senior Tara Lance all had two-hit games for Solon, which mustered 13 total. Hanrahan had a home run and two RBI.
It was also a close game against fourth-ranked Bishop Heelan. Solon fell in an early 1-0 hole, but scored twice in the top of the third inning and once in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Heelan took control with four runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 5-3 win. Miller suffered the loss.
West pitched a seven-inning shutout against Harlan in an 8-0 win. West struck out 13 batters against no walks and only two hits.
Meanwhile, the offense was also humming. Hanrahan was 3-4 with two doubles and a triple, sophomore Taylor Moore was 2-3 with a double and a solo home run, and freshman Jadyn Jeter was 3-3 with a double and three runs scored.
Miller picked up the 8-3 win against CCA, striking out four and walking one while allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits. She also helped her cause at the plate, going 3-3 with a home run and four RBI.
