Lady Spartans top field at Tipton
TIPTON– A small field, but Solon’s girls racked up good early season results as the high school track season moved outside last week. Solon was first in a four-team meet at Tipton, with uncharacteristically warm weather for early season.
“Once again our field events got us off to a great start. Emily Bransky’s 17’4.5 long jump is just two inches off the school record,” noted coach Brent Sands. “Kara Misel’s 115’3 was a great start for the first throw of the year in the discus.” Each girl won her field event, with Misel doubling up with a 39’7.5 shot put win. Kelsey Cave tied her indoor best with 5’3 to win the high jump as well.
This early in the season, the goal is to build from week to week with eyes on district and state meets. In between, though, the late April Drake Relays beckon. The nationally renowned meet has tough qualifying cutoffs. So far, though, the Spartans look good in a couple relays.
“The shuttle hurdle relay (Kari Vance, Jennifer Shelman, Kaitlin Knoedel and Rylee Smith) turned a very good time for their first run at it. Their 108.9 is approaching last year’s Drake cutoff,” said Sands, noting that Shelman’s split was much improved over early last season. “The 4x1 time (with Smith, Karly Kramer, Jessic Brimeyer and Bransky) was real good. That should make Drake.” Solon was first in the 4x1, and a close second in the shuttle.
Other wins for the Spartans included Brimeyer, Kramer, Madi Shafer and Bransky in the 4x200 relay.
But individual performances, in relays or individual events that did not break through for wins bolster the Spartans as the season heats up. “Alyssa Rickels with her 2:31 split (800 leg) in the distance relay and then a good 4x 400 leadoff (1:05) were good to see. Jadyn Miller’s 1:04 as a late add in the 4x400 was a great time, too,” said Sands. “Angel Wilford started off way ahead of where she was a year ago in the 400 hurdles.” Wilford’s 1:19.33 claimed third.
After a scheduled meet Tuesday in Williamsburg, the Spartans run Thursday at Tiffin, in the Clear Creek Amana Relays.
