Lady Spartans top No. 1 CCA
OXFORD — The seventh-ranked Solon Lady Spartans handed No. 1 Clear Creek Amana (CCA) its second loss of the season with a 10-6 win on the Clippers’ home diamond last Thursday.
The two teams traded the lead in the first inning, Solon put four big runs on the board in the second, and CCA climbed back within a run in the bottom of the third.
For two tense innings it was nip and tuck, but the Lady Spartans broke out to a 9-4 lead with four more runs in the top of the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh.
Holly Hinkel pitched all seven innings for the Lady Spartans, allowing only three earned runs against the high-powered Clippers’ offense. She struck out three and walked four while giving up 10 hits.
Meanwhile, Solon’s offense stayed aggressive.
The Lady Spartans clubbed 14 hits, including five doubles (two each by Alyssa Rickels and Kara Misel) and stole six bases against the CCA defense. Rickels and Misel were each 3-4 at the plate, with Misel knocking in three runs, while Rylee Smith went 3-3 with 2 RBI.
Solon took advantage of four Clipper errors.
In the July 1 rankings from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, the Clippers dropped to second while the Lady Spartans rose to fourth. Carlisle was the new number one team with a 31-1 record in Class 3A.
Solon has now strung together nine consecutive victories dating back to a June 20 loss against West Delaware.
The Lady Spartans also swept road doubleheaders at Central DeWitt (June 27) and Waterloo Columbus (June 29).
Kristen Purdy struck out six and allowed four runs against Central DeWitt in a 9-4 opening game win. Ali Herdliska hit two doubles in the come-from-behind win. Solon was down 3-4 after four innings, but scored six unanswered runs to close out the game.
The Lady Spartans had an easier time in the second game with 17 hits in a 19-1 romp that ended after four innings. The Lady Spartans scored 10 runs in the first two innings while Hinkel scattered three hits and allowed only one run on the mound. Misel homered while Mel Breza, Emma Rickels, Hannah Turkal and Smith each added doubles. Smith and Emily Bransky each had two stolen bases.
The firepower continued at Waterloo Columbus as Solon put up 27 runs in two games and closed both out early.
Purdy and Emily Ira combined on the opening game, a four-inning 16-2 win, while Hinkel and Ira pitched in the five-inning 11-1 nightcap.
Casey Musgrave hit her second home run in the first game, going 3-3. She and Emma Rickels each had three RBI.
The Lady Spartans collected eight walks in the second game and stole nine bases.
Solon is 27-7 on the season, 15-2 in the WaMaC East.
