Leonard Chmelicek, 89, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at Linn Manor Care Center in Marion from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Per Leonard’s wishes, there will be no services.
Leonard was born July 26, 1923, at home in Cedar Rapids and was delivered by his parents, Emil and Anna (Cerveny) Chmelicek. He attended McKinley High School until a teacher told him he might as well quit. He grew up during the Great Depression, and at age 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was discharged in 1951. He married Lucille Tomkins on April 5, 1946, in Iowa City.
Leonard often worked two jobs and kept a huge garden to support his family. After holding a variety of jobs through the years he retired from Universal Engineering.
Local survivors include his daughter Lynn (Steve) Pudil of Swisher, and his son Len Chmelicek of Ely.
