Liberty girls golf drops close one to Bears

CORALVILLE– Liberty High’s varsity girls golf team is “getting better every time out,” said coach Brian Wernimont after the Lightning dropped a close match Tuesday, April 17, at Brown Deer Golf Course, to West Branch. The Bears won 209 to the Bolts’ 212. Aleah Rocha, from West Branch, won with 48, while Liberty’s Neely Maurus was the runner up with 49. Cassidy Sundine shot a career-best 51 in the match.
“We have played five nine-hole meets,” Wernimont said. “We have set five school records– 246, 222, 217, 214 and 212.”
The Bolts travel to the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club, 2275 Hickory Ave. in Mount Pleasant, on Friday, April 27, for a 1 p.m. invitational with Mount Pleasant, Ottumwa, Clear Creek Amana, Muscatine, Grinnell and Notre Dame (Burlington). The Solon Lady Spartans visit the Lightning, at the Brown Deer Golf Course, on Tuesday, May 1, at 3 p.m. for a dual meet, and Liberty takes on City High, West High and Cedar Rapids Xavier in a quad meet at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course, 4390 Sand Rd. SE in Iowa City.

Maurus beats out 57 other golfers for the No.1 spot

KALONA– Liberty High’s fledgling varsity girls golf team just missed setting yet another school record in its debut season with a total score of 424 Thursday, April 19, in Mid-Prairie’s Hawk Invitational held at the Kalona Country Club.
Williamsburg and Mid-Prairie tied for the top finish with 396, Wilton was third with 409 and the Liberty Lightning took the fourth spot in a 10-team field.
Liberty’s Neely Maurus won the invitational with an 83 through 18 holes while Grace Crimmins put up a personal best 106.
The “Bolts” travel to Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club on Friday, April 27, for a 1 p.m. invitational and will host Solon on Tuesday, May 1, at the Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville starting at 3 p.m.
