CORALVILLE— Iowa City West coach Brad Stiles found himself wondering at times if the Linn Mar goalkeeper had magnets or something else in his gloves. The keeper managed to grab almost every Trojan ball that made it into his box.
“We just couldn’t find the back of the net” Stiles said.
Fortunately, senior Alex Troester did. Twice. Troester’s goals (one in the first half, the other in the second) gave the Trojans a 2-0 win and set them up for a Saturday, May 26, Class 4A final round match at home against Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Troester scored with 19:30 to go in the first half off an assist from Mueng Sunday, with 24:01 left in the second. The second goal allowed Stiles to breathe what he said after the game was “a sigh of relief. The second goal always helps things, the third is even better.”
Despite a constant wind, Stiles discounted it helping or hindering his crew.
“We’ve played on enough windy days, we just adjust.” When asked about meeting the Kennedy Cougars on the current home field at Northwest Junior High (rather than the new field at West) for the substate final and the right to go to Des Moines for the state tournament, a smile crossed his face.
“We’re the only team that plays well on this field,” he said.
