Lois Mae Martin Macken, 84, of Iowa City and formerly of Ames, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2013, while a patient at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services were Dec. 16 at First Baptist Church in Ames with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson.
Lois was born on March 22, 1929, on the family farm near Fort Dodge; the daughter of Clarence and Wilda King Martin. Lois graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1947 and married Robert R. Macken on Dec. 22, 1946, in Fort Dodge. She worked at Hach Companies in Ames until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Lois is survived by her son, Dean (Lois) Macken of Solon; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (Art) Ferkin of California. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Linda Shelgren; and two sisters, Jean McGuire and Dolores Martin.

Paul Ridder, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Dec. 14 at the Neighborhood Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Jim Coyle. Burial was at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his children, Carol Thompson of Ely, Barb Ridder of Cedar Rapids and David Ridder and partner Mike Murphy of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren, Amanda, Adam and Alyssa Thompson; sister, Alice Crossley of Solon; sisters-in-law, Bev Ridder of Cedar Falls and Ella Marie Ridder of Garner; and special friend, Sandie Allen.
Paul was born on March 25, 1930, in Waterloo, son of William and Sylvia (Baumgartner) Ridder. He married Gladys Knox on Nov. 3, 1953; she passed Sept. 13, 1990. He worked as a teacher in Cedar Rapids for 45 years. Paul served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was recently inducted into the Jefferson High School Baseball Hall of Fame.
