TIFFIN– The Marion Indians came into a WaMaC volleyball match-up Tuesday, Sept. 23, with the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers ranked third in Class 4A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association. The Clippers held the number six spot, and despite a valiant effort, fell to Marion 3-0 in varsity action.
In all three sets, the Clippers kept pace with the Indians until the visitors capitalized on CCA errors and went on three- and four-point runs toward the end. Marion took the match 25-20, 25-18 and 25-17 led by Alyssa Thomas’ 14 kills. Natalie Brimeyer led the Clippers with seven kills and two aces in an 11-11 serving effort. Ashley Prusha had six kills for CCA while Dacia Lipkea, Corrine Schwarting and Alyssa Weldon had four each. Hanna Stokes had three kills in the effort as well.
Coach Jackie Clubb was encouraged by what she saw despite the final score.
“Our team showed great improvement in all aspects of the game,” she said. “The players have been working really hard in practice and were able to apply what they worked on into the game.” The Indians slipped away, she said, “because they made fewer unforced errors than we did.”
Marion improved to 17-2 while the Clippers slipped to 6-5.
The team will finish the regular season on the road with a Saturday, Oct. 4, appearance in the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational (9 a.m. start), a trip to Vinton-Shellsburg on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and then to South Tama the following week.
