Mustangs snap Lightning girls’ streak

Liberty falls, 55-32, to Dubuque Hempstead

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity girls basketball team ended 2017 with a four-game winning streak, but one day into the new year, it came to a jarring halt as the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead stampeded over the Lightning, 55-32, in North Liberty.
Liberty’s defense held the Mustangs to six points in the first period, but only put up three of their own. Hempstead held the Lightning to two points in the second for a 17-5 advantage at halftime.
Liberty rallied with a 10-point effort in the third, but the Mustangs galloped away to a 36-15 lead going into the final quarter. The Bolts had their best eight minutes of the night in the fourth period with 17 points posted to the scoreboard.
Sophomore Cora Saunders led Liberty with a team-high 17 points, including a trio of 3-point baskets. Sophomore Isabel Smith produced five points for Liberty and four came from sophomore Sam McPherson. Junior Megan Davis contributed three points, while sophomore Brylee Klosterman had two and sophomore Cecily Johnston added one point.
Klosterman led Liberty on the boards with six rebounds, while Saunders had four and McPherson produced three.
Liberty dropped to 5-6, while Hempstead improved to 6-3.
The Lightning travel to Waverly-Shell Rock High School, in Waverly, on Friday, Jan. 12, for a girl-boy varsity doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. (boys to follow) and visit Dubuque Wahlert Catholic on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 7:30 p.m. Liberty returns to the home hardwood on Friday, Jan. 26, as Fairfield visits for a 6:15 p.m. varsity game.
