NL Pantry seeks pastries, crafts for Nov. 23 garden fundraiser

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry is planning a bake sale, craft sale, and other activities during a fall-themed fundraiser for its community teaching garden from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at First United Methodist Church, 89 N. Jones Blvd.
“We want it to feel like a fall farmer’s market,” Pantry Director Tina DuBois said. “We plan to involve the entire community once our ‘Gardening for Health’ project is complete, so it seems natural to host a fundraising event inviting the community to share their favorite seasonal and holiday-themed foods and crafts to raise money for a good cause.”
The pantry plans to build a 9,600-square-foot community teaching garden that will provide fresh produce for more than 500 pantry families and provide garden-to-table educational programs for the entire community. The Wellmark Foundation is matching donations to the garden project dollar-for-dollar by Dec. 15 up to $38,850. Already, the pantry has collected more than $17,000 toward the match.
The Nov. 23 event will feature a bouncy house and other activities for kids and adults, and also will include a pie-tasting contest, bake sale, craft sale, cake walk and a silent auction.
In preparation, the pantry is actively seeking donations of crafts, pies, other baked goods, and other seasonal or holiday-themed items– such as new and gently used decorations, books, or other household items– to help raise money during the event. Supporters can register online to donate.
The pantry also invites all businesses to consider sponsoring the event with a donation to benefit the garden project.
Supporters who donate $250 or more to sponsor the event can promote their business during the event and have their logo featured on the event program, event banner, and the pantry website. They also can designate a judge for the pie-tasting contest.
Sponsors who donate $1,000 or more will receive all of the above benefits, plus a special mention in promotional materials before and during the event, an opportunity to set up an exhibit table at the fundraiser, and recognition on a memorial brick in the pantry’s “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” patio.
