North Liberty launches curbside composting program

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty is launching a program to help its residents divert food waste from the landfill.
The city and Johnson County Refuse are piloting the program for the next month with a small number of households and will expand the program in mid-October.
Participants will pay a refundable deposit for a curbside collection bin, which they’ll need to line with a yard waste bag, available for $1.65 at a variety of stores in North Liberty. The compost will be collected with their recycling and trash each week.
Residents can compost spoiled food, leftovers, pizza boxes and other uncoated paper that has been in contact with food; wooden produce crates; meat, seafood and many food waste items through the program.
Residents interested in participating should contact Tracey Mulcahey by phone at 319-626-5712 or via email at tmulcahey@northlibertyiowa.org.
