IOWA CITY– Heavy, foreboding clouds and a cool wind cast an ominous and gloomy atmosphere over the pitch at West High Friday, May 8, as the Dubuque Senior Rams visited the West High Trojans. The gloom turned to doom for West as a 1-1 tie was decided with Penalty Kicks (PK’s) at a 4-2 advantage for the Rams.
After a scoreless first half, West High’s Ted Paulsen broke through to score halfway through the second period. It looked as though the Trojans would hold on for the one-goal win, but with just under five minutes left in regular play the Rams scored on a free kick to tie the match. Two scoreless overtime periods resulted in a PK shootout.
Jackson Nasby and Antonio Sanchez both scored for the Trojans, but a quartet of Rams managed to shoot the ball past West keeper Jack Chen for the 2-1 win.
According to the Mississippi Valley Conference standings through May 10 the Trojans dropped to 5-4 while the Rams improved to 5-4 in the Valley Division. Overall, West was 7-6 and second in the division with the Rams at 5-7. Linn-Mar sat at the top of the Division with a 7-2 conference record and an 11-3 overall showing.
On Friday, May 15, the Trojans will host Waterloo East with a 4:15 p.m. start for a varsity doubleheader featuring Des Moines Roosevelt at 7:15 p.m. West faces City High at the University of Iowa’s soccer complex on Monday, May 18, with the varsity girls playing at 4:15 p.m. and the boys to follow at 7:15 p.m. The regular season ends at home with Dubuque Hempstead on Friday, May 22, at 7 p.m.
