Prairie scorches Liberty High football, 53-6

IOWA CITY– Just before the opening kick off Thursday, Sept. 15, at Iowa City West High, Liberty High’s coach Jeff Gordon sounded worried. “They’re good, they’re really good,” he said, nodding across the field at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks.
The Hawks and the Liberty Lightning’s “O (Original) Bolts” clashed in a freshman game, with the Hawks blitzing the Lightning, 53-6.
Jack Ankenbauer put the Lightning on the scoreboard with a touchdown run in the first minute of play. The 6-0 lead was short-lived, as the Hawks tied on a quarterback keeper roughly one minute later. A trio of long-run touchdowns by Prairie followed, putting the Bolts in a 25-6 hole. The carnage continued with a Prairie interception of a Drake Woody pass which led to a 40-plus yard run and another Hawk touchdown.
A bright flash for the Lightning came in the second quarter, Sam Nicklaus sacked the Prairie quarterback. But the Bolts went into the halftime break down, 32-6.
Prairie extended the lead in the third to 46-6 with long touchdown runs and two interceptions of Liberty passes. The Hawks scored their final touchdown and a successful point-after kick with 8:48 remaining in the ballgame.
The Bolts return to action Thursday, Sept. 29, at home (Iowa City West High) against Solon, followed by a road trip to Dubuque Hempstead on Thursday, Oct. 6. Their road travel continues Thursday, Oct. 13, with a trip to Dubuque Senior. The Bolts finish the season at home on Thursday, Oct. 20, as Linn-Mar visits with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
