Preliminary results for Swisher, CCA vote
JOHNSON COUNTY– Voters in two areas of Johnson County have received at least preliminary answers.
On Tuesday, Feb. 4, Swisher residents elected a new mayor to replace the position vacated by Tim Mason’s resignation in November. There were just two candidates on the ballot: Randy Hurlbert and Christopher Taylor.
Results released by the Johnson County Auditor’s office at 8 p.m. Tuesday show Taylor taking the seat, with a tally of 151 to Hurlbert’s 136 votes.
Residents of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district also answered an important question on Tuesday; whether to authorize the district to issue $48 million in general obligation bonds for a number of construction projects including a new elementary school and expansion of the current middle school in Tiffin.
The vote on the bond issue required a 60 percent majority to pass, and early results showed 79 percent approval. As of 8 p.m., voters passed the measure by a vote of 989-268.
Turnout for CCA’s vote was poor until late in the day, with just 6.43 percent of the district’s 7,618 eligible voters coming to the polls by the auditor’s 3 p.m. precinct reporting time. When polls closed at 8 p.m., that election had a turnout of 1,237, or 16.24 percent.
Swisher had a better turnout, percentage-wise. With 598 registered voters, the auditor reported a turnout of 18 percent by 3 p.m., and an 8 p.m. tally of 288 voters, or 46 percent of registered voters.
All numbers are preliminary until the auditor conducts an official canvass of all votes on Feb. 11.
