Lady Spartans sweep Maquoketa, go 3-1 at home Classic

SOLON– Head Coach Jim White wanted his team to be challenged over the weekend at the Solon Classic softball tournament, and they were.
The Lady Spartans went 3-1 at their weekend tourney, defeating Mediapolis, City High and Des Moines Lincoln before falling to Iowa City West.
Coupled with a home sweep of Maquoketa June 22 and a split with Western Dubuque June 26 and Solon moved to 25-10 on the season.
The Lady Spartans dropped from No. 5 to No. 7 in Class 3A in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union rankings issued June 22.
Solon ends the regular season Wednesday, June 28, at No. 6 (3A) Mount Vernon, followed by an appearance at the Ottumwa Classic Friday and Saturday, June 30 and July 1.
After that, it’s into the postseason for the Lady Spartans, who host the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks in a Region 7 quarterfinal Wednesday, July 5, at 7 p.m. The winner advances to face either PCM or Chariton Friday, July 7, in Solon, with the final and a berth in the state tournament decided Monday, July 10, at the home of the highest remaining seed. Albia, Central Decatur, Clarke and Centerville occupy the other side of the bracket.
The march to the playoffs continued with the home sweep of Maquoketa June 22.
Senior McKenna Miller and freshman Kayla West teamed to keep the Cardinals scoreless over the course of two games.
Miller struck out 12 to earn the 3-0 win in the opener, while West struck out 11 in a 7-0 nightcap.
Senior Jess Heick had two hits and an RBI in the first win. Senior Haley Kluesner had two RBI to lead the team, while sophomore Taylor Ryan had three hits to pace the Lady Spartans in game two.
Solon’s varsity softball team returned to the diamond the next day to begin the Solon Classic with a 12-0 victory over Mediapolis and a 6-5 come-from-behind win against City High.
City High had taken a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning before the Lady Spartans could respond with a run in the bottom of the inning. Solon shook off two home runs by City High to score five times in the bottom of the sixth against City High hurler Ayana Lindsey for the win.
Against Des Moines Lincoln, Solon broke open a 4-4 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for an 8-4 win. The Lady Spartans squeezed eight hits and six walks from Lincoln’s Grace Twelmeyer. Heick and freshman Jadyn Jeter each had two RBI; Ryan had three hits to lead the team, while senior Tara Lance added two.
The only stumble came against Iowa City West in a 5-1 loss.
West starter Kylie Heisdorffer allowed a single run in the bottom of the seventh to the Lady Spartans on a Jeter RBI.
Solon defeated Western Dubuque, 16-4, before falling, 17-1, in doubleheader action June 26. No statistics were available at press time.
