Randy “Herm” G. Hochstedler, 55, of Kalona died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at his home following a long illness. A graveside service was held Sept. 11, 2013 at Memory Gardens in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice.
Randy Gene Hochstedler was born Aug. 27, 1958, in Iowa City, the son of Raymond (Hosty) and Muriel (Smalley) Hochstedler. He graduated from Mid-Prairie High School in 1976 and attended Kirkwood College. He was employed at Hochstedler service station for most of his life. Herm enjoyed going to Iowa football games and cheering for the Yankees. He was an umpire for little league games and for many years he ran the chains on the sidelines of the Mid-Prairie football games.
Survivors include four siblings; Ruth (Dave) Kelley of Kalona, Judy (Gary) Snyder of Riverside, Phyllis (Eric Dethmann) Hochstedler of North Liberty, Gary (Jayne) Hochstedler of Kalona; three nephews and one niece: Justin (Vicki) Deitrich, Ryan Miller, Jeff (Katie) Miller and Jill Kelley (Josh Mitchell). Great nieces and nephews surviving are Jace and Sarina Deitrich, Cameron Miller and Ayla Mitchell.
