Read some staff favorites

A display of non-fiction books that are favorites of the library staff has been set up in the black shelving unit just inside the door. Be sure to take a look. It is a working display, which means you are welcome to check-out any book that is displayed. If a book you are interested in isn’t available, ask the person at the circulation desk to put you on a waiting list. A few selected are listed below.
Kris Brown, library director, selected “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot (616 LA) as one of her favorites. Jen Leveck, Children’s Services Librarian, selected a little-known story of the Civil War with the book, “Secrets of a Civil War Submarine,” by Sally M. Walker (J 973.7 WAL).
Other staffers have selected a variety of non-fictions ranging from children’s books to adult best sellers, including “Zeitoun” by David Eggers. “Zeitoun,” a recent selection of the book club, is a true story about one family caught between America’s two biggest policy disasters: the war on terror and the response to Hurricane Katrina. “Dewey, The Library Cat” by Vicki Myron is the best seller about the resident cat at the Spencer Public Library. “Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers” is one that will raise eyebrows and probably be leafed through with curiosity. Author Mary Roach presents one of the funniest and most unusual books of the year. Often hilarious, this book explores the lives of our body’s postmortem.
“Heaven Is for Real” by Todd Burpo (133.901 BUR) has been a very popular book and a quick read. It is the true story of a four-year old, Colton Burpo, who slips from consciousness during surgery and enters heaven. Colton relates to his family about meeting his great grandfather and a miscarried sister. “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert is an all-around favorite. This beautifully written memoir tells how Ms. Gilbert made the difficult choice to leave America for a year to find what she truly wanted from life. The movie adaptation of the book, starring Julia Roberts, is available in the DVD section.
